THE STYLE FILE - KURT PIO

AGE: 33 (the Jesus year)
OCCUPATION: Artist and Milliner
CITY: Cape Town

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
I have had a total wardrobe clear-out within the last year, my clothes were ALL strictly black, white and grey - it was the only thing I wanted to wear back then, and now it’s all totally changed!

All I want is colour. And black has been replaced by navy blue. My style has now evolved into a bit of a bohemian artist, with boyish cuts, ethnic influences and a hippy relaxed ‘new age’ edge – inspired by Wes Anderson’s ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ and a recent trip to India. I want my clothes to be made with honest materials - wools, cottons, linen, and cashmere where possible.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STORE/BRAND?
It would have to be David West’s Weekend Special. Not only is he a close friend, but I really believe in him and his unusual and fresh way of looking at things.

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?
Isabella Blow. She was very interesting, and she always looked like she was having the most fun with her outfits and hats.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE HANGOUT SPOT?
I’m a hermit these days, but if I do go out it will be to Evol of course.

WHAT IS THE WORST FASHION/GROOMING MISTAKE YOU'VE EVER MADE?
When I was in Primary school, I went to a dress up ‘punk’ party. My hair was gelled into a serious mohawk, and my mother painted stripes of red and green food colouring in it. It looked awesome, but then never washed out and we had school pictures the following week!

WHAT ARE YOUR FIVE ESSENTIALS WHEN TRAVELING?
My iPhone, my Camper boots, Burt’s Bees beeswax lipbalm, my Canon G10 camera, and a hand-made with love, address cum notebook from my close friend Gabrielle Guy.

IF YOU HAD TO LIVE IN SOMEONE ELSES BODY FOR A YEAR WHOSE WOULD IT BE?
Well maybe not for a full year, but my Kinesiologist Suzie Basset.

NAME A FASHION TREND/STYLE YOU LOVE BUT WOULD NEVER WEAR:
I’ve learnt to never say never.

IS THERE ANYTHING IN YOUR WARDROBE YOU WISH YOU BOUGHT MORE OF?
Well, not bought, but I wish I got my grandmother to knit me more of her hand-knitted wool socks before she died. They were knitted with pure wool, and the toes and heels were knitted with a thread of cotton mixed with the wool for extra strength. These socks are the best!

WHAT WAS THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED RELATING TO FASHION OR GROOMING?
Don’t worry too much about what other people think, and have fun.

DO YOU HAVE A FRIEND WITH GREAT PERSONAL STYLE? DO YOU FANCY YOURSELF AN INDIVIDUAL STYLE-MAKER?
