This season geek takes a class in cool. With edgy punk influences Van Assche takes staples and mixes them up. Enlarged checks, double belting and soft, long knits tell us the Belgian will join in formalizing the working class but it will be on his terms.

THIS WEEK ON GQ.CO.ZA: RAW DENIM
Q: I have been hearing a lot about "raw denim" lately. Also, I hear you're never supposed to wash them. How true is this and won't it eventually smell or become gross?
Graeme, Cape Town
A: Your concern is valid – hygeine is an important factor for any modern man to consider. Luckily we're a little more conscious of cleanliness than we used to be, plus it's become socially acceptable for us to look after ourselves.

WOOLWORTHS AND STUDIO W
I recently took part in a fun project with Studio W that had me styling two friends, Thulane Hadebe and Andrew Brauteseth, in their latest range. The idea was to tend to those troubling questions in menswear and so Woolworths enlisted Roelof Vanwyk to film us as we sorted them out. I honored my nickname in Studio which was Dr. W and removed the doubt that my friends cast on themselves in times of a sartorial challenge. To throw your questions at Dr. W click here, select the ASK MARCO tab and scroll down. In all seriousness it was a fun day and you can take a look at the video below:

THAT'S NICE! ON GQ: WHY MUST I LEAVE THE LAST BUTTON UN-DONE ON MY SUIT?
I constantly get asked this question so for this week I am addressing it over at GQ.
Fashion doesn't make it easy on men, does it? Take suits. There is so much to consider: colour, pattern, fit... And the jacket! Large lapels, thin lapels, peak lapels, rounded... Single breasted, double breasted... And then buttons, quite the mystery to men, as you can imagine, and yet the easiest to understand. So let's make this one quick and painless...

WHAT KIND OF MAN-BAG DO I NEED?
Q. I want to wear a man-bag but I feel so awkward. What should I do?
A: The thing about pockets is that they only carry so much without the unwanted saddle bulge. You could just carry your stuff around in your hands, but that doesn't really work either. Now if only there was some way you could hold your stuff, in something, and maybe hang it from your shoulder. I'll let you mull that one over for a sec while I ask what the problem is for a man to carry a bag? Sure you can joke and can call it a man-bag but in the end isn't it just a bag for a man?

DO THE DOUBLE - ON GQ.CO.ZA
Do you remember double-breasted suits in the '80s and '90s? What do you remember associating them with? Surely not sleek Wall Street types (although in Bret Easton Ellis' “American Psycho” they were rather common). No, somehow when you cast your mind back to this suit you begin to recall how awfully things fit back in that time. Slouchy, oversized and padded. You picture some goon smoking a cigar and holding a tommy gun. It may look cool, but it's not attractive.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT ON GQ.CO.ZA
Knowing your body type is the key to dressing well no matter what you have to work with. This works the same way a curvier woman knows to cinch in her waist to create an hour-glass image. It's all about illusion...

ON COLOUR, TRENDS AND TAILORING AT FABIANI CTFW 2011
It's official. Men are no longer scared of colour. At least such is the case with Cape Town Fashion week which delivered two menswear shows with obvious similarities. Fabiani for their latest showing included a strong colour blocking trend reminiscent of Jil Sanders 2011 resort collection which first appeared in Burberry Prorsums 2008 showing...
CARDUCCI AT CAPE TOWN FASHION WEEK 2011 - GQ.CO.ZA
As promised here are my thoughts on Carducci at Cape Town fashion week 2011. Celebrating their 33rd year of business, Carducci's frontmen Mark Gooding and Baker Frizlar take this season to their own kind of paradise where Italian flair meets British dandy and men wear large straw fedoras with oversized sunglasses...

THIS WEEK ON GQ.CO.ZA: THE SECRET OF TAILORING
The most important detail about a well dressed man is the fit of his clothing. While it is unlikely that you frequent Savile Row for bespoke tailoring, it must be known there is another way, a secret I can let you in on. Better yet it will cost you a lot less money and grief.
