These past few months, the big news coming out from Porsche's headquarters in Stuttgart concerned the brand-new 911. And that's only natural as it’s not every day that we see a new 911 – and its most radical evolution at that.

On the other hand, the Boxster / Cayman duo is almost nowhere to be seen. That’s also to be expected: their replacements are coming next year, so the current models are more or less old news.

However, Porsche would like to remind us that the Cayman is still alive and well with a new video staring Porsche UK's Chief Driving Consultant, Gordon Robertso.

Porsche is inextricably linked to Le Mans having won the famous 24-hour endurance race a record 16 times. The first win came in 1970 with the legendary 917, and the last in 1998 with the 911 GT1.

This past July, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer announced that it will return to the La Sarthe circuit in 2014 with an official entry. Not that it has ever actually left, as numerous privately owned 911s participated each year and even the factory team won the LMP2 class in 2008 and 2009 with the RS Spyder.

Like every new generation of the 911, the latest incarnation of Porsche's most recognized and celebrated model series that bears the internal designation 991, continues to draw our attention well after its presentation.

In the video you're about to watch after the jump, our fellow car aficionados at Autoblog.nl took the new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S fitted with the PDK dual-clutch transmission for a test drive that included an assessment of its top speed on what we're going to assume -for obvious reasons- is the vaunted German Autobahn.

Its shape may look very similar to the previous model, but Porsche’s 911 that made its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September is pretty much a brand-new car. Porsche’s motto of “evolution, not revolution” clearly applies primarily to the shape of its iconic sportscar, which has been its mainstay product for more than four decades.
It doesn’t necessarily extend under the skin, though: the only stipulation so far is that every 911 must have a flat-six engine placed at the rear.
Before releasing the new generation code-named 991 to the public Porsche engineers had to make sure that it would be operating perfectly under even the most extreme conditions. It’s not something novel, as most car manufacturers usually test their models rigorously to avoid costly mistakes.
Seeing Porsche engineers burning the midnight oil and rigorously testing the 911 in such diverse conditions as South Africa and the Arctic Circle, and even witnessing some components fail is, in our opinion, anything but boring.
